Why does change happen in one situation and why not in another. Some changes are like leaders, other lags and have to be dragged along.

The G8 – a group of eight most developed and democratic countries in the world – is a group that is facing a lot of changes.

First of all, the group itself and its acronym “G8″. The seven countries that once constituted the group (by that time still called the G7) are no longer those that today make up the most developed and democratic countries. The change we are talking about here is that of the environment; during the last decade other countries have developed more strongly and have passed some of the G8 members.

There seems to be sort of a seniority principles that states that those who where first remain in charge. This is also and often used in organization. It is a principle that conflicts with innovation and change.

Yet the G8 changes but in a different way. Instead of changing the configuration of the group, it “invites members” during the G8-meetings. This is sort of a compromise to change something but not to the core.

A third view on this change process is that the G8 is no longer the “institution” that is required for today’s problems in the world. This is also often found in organizations. Old solutions become obsolete but as long as there is now new one that takes over the “established order” remains intact.

In case of the G8 everybody knows this and laughs about it. It is a network event, as many others, evidence of a solution from the past that is no longer accurate. We will just have to wait for a real change that will bring a new solution.
